I’m drawn to subject matter that communicates a story. Working in the realist genre and referencing photos I have taken, my relationship with the images evolves over time. I look beyond the actual for emotional and symbolic cues to flesh out the narratives. Through the process of painting, in this state of heightened awareness, surprises await, meaning intensifies. The paintings are my testimony to time, place and human connection.

About the Artist

Louise Cloutier, painter, art educator, advocate for artists and the arts, is actively growing the cultural footprint of her North Cumberland community. She is co-founder of the Pugwash Open Air Gallery, an outdoor installation consisting of 18 large reproductions of artworks by local artists that are permanently displayed on the facades of buildings throughout the village. She is co-organizer of the annual summer Art in the Park event that is held in conjunction with Pugwash Harbourfest. For 25 years of her 35-year teaching career, she was the art teacher at Pugwash District High School.  Post-retirement, she founded ArtQuarters, a community studio where she, along with invited artists, offered art workshops over a period of five years. She is an original member of the Pugwash Artist Collective and is also a member of the Exhibition Selection Committee at the Fraser Gallery in Tatamagouche. A prolific painter, she exhibits her works annually. Louise was born in Quebec, but retraced her maritime roots in the late 1980’s, making, first, Pugwash, then Oxford, Nova Scotia her home.
