Phyllis was raised in Louisbourg N.S., and has made Parrsboro her home since 1987. Upon retiring from Parrsboro Elementary School after 31 years of teaching, she began painting as a hobby. Inspired by the art of her father Alex and the words of encouragement from her husband Jim, she started painting local beach stones and hiding them in the community as a part of the Kindness Rocks Project. “One painted stone, as small as it is, with its message of positivity, at the right moment, can affect someone’s entire day or outlook”.
She works with acrylics on canvas and is attracted to bright colors and maritime themes. On her abstract pieces, she applies the Dutch Pour technique, using air to manipulate the paints on the canvas.
Phyllis believes you can do anything you put your mind to. She strives to be a lifelong learner, and continues to take art classes and demonstrations from established artists through the Parrsboro Art Lab Studios & Gallery, the Tidnish Bridge Art Gallery, and Bendi’s Art Emporium in Amherst.
