Sarah Couture McPhail

Sarah Couture McPhail

New to the Awokun area in Port Greville, Sarah Couture McPhail (They/Them, She/Her) is a visual artist with a diverse range of crafting and art-making skills, honed in Tkaronto (Toronto) and born in Mattagami Aki, (Timmins) Ontario. With a deep passion for community-based, inclusive collaborative arts projects, Sarah engages people of all ages in exploring their surroundings and rediscovering dormant skills. They believe in the power of art to foster community and drive social change, advocating that everyone has the potential to create, whether through art itself or the experience of creating.

Sarah’s personal practice delves into themes of shifting colonial identities, family legacies, and hidden narratives. Utilizing a variety of mediums, they mend together fragmented stories that emerge from both photographs and imagination, revealing deeper truths.

Previously, Sarah served as the Arts Opportunities Coordinator at SKETCH Working Arts in Toronto, where they managed diverse projects and programs supporting young adults navigating poverty and systemic oppression. This work was critical in how they appreciate the world and how they approach art making.
