The 8th annual Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival will take place in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia from Wednesday to Sunday, June 19-23, 2024. The event is located on the spectacular Minas Basin, part of the world-famous Bay of Fundy, which is home to the highest tides in the world.

ENTRY INFORMATION

Eligibility

– Open to all artists 18 years (any applicants younger than 18 must to accompanied by a parent or guardian and the application must be authorized by a parent or guardian)

– Artists will be accepted to participate in the PIPAF through a juried process.

– The Jury will select 30 artists to paint and compete for cash and product awards


APPLICATION PROCESS

There are three steps to the Application Process:

  • Fill in and submit the Application Form below

  • Send required materials:

    • Biography highlights and headshot

    • 4 career bullet points as required for promotional purposes

    • Three images via the application form.

      • Image requirements:

        All three images MUST be .jpeg images of your plein air work

        Studio work will not be accepted

        The work must have been accomplished in the previous 3 years

        Each image should be in .jpeg format and sized to a maximum 1000 pixels at their largest dimension (height or width)

        Each image must be no more than 1 MB.

        Images should represent the original artwork with no enhancements with photoshop or similar programs other than minor lighting corrections and re-sizing.

        Send full image. Do not include frame or anything other than the painted image.

        Identify each .jpeg image as follows: Your Last Name, then First Name, followed by the painting number (e.g., Smith_John_1, Smith_John_2, Smith_John_3)

  • Application Fee – CAD $50. The application fee (non-refundable) is paid through the online registration process. Make your payment via our secure online service.

    Once these three steps have been completed, you’ll receive a confirmation notice.

    The online application must be received by the PIPAF committee by 11:59 PM AST on March 15, 2024.


ACCEPTANCE

  • Successful Artists will be notified of their acceptance to the competition during the week of April 15, 2024. Those accepted will be provided with more event details.

  • Artists must confirm their participation by email, and whether or not they require a billet, no later than April 30, 2024.

ACCOMMODATION

PIPAF will make every effort to provide billeting for artists who express a need for accommodation by May 7, 2024 on a first come first served basis.


FESTIVAL DETAILS

DATES: June 19-23, 2023

  • Artist Registration – Wednesday June 19 - Artists will register and receive information packets at this time regarding the Parrsboro Area. Canvases and papers will be stamped.

  • Maximum painting dimensions are limited to 30 inches including frame, horizontally or vertically.

  • Additional canvas stamping will be available at the Parrsboro Creative office throughout the event.

  • Artists will paint in Parrsboro and surrounding area from June 19-23. The daily zones for painting can be found here.

  • The ‘Quick Draw’ event is open to juried and non-juried participants and will be held Sunday June 23 from 12-2 pm, followed by judging from 2:30-3 pm by William Rogers. At 3 pm, the Awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be announced, along with the People’s Choice Award from the Main Exhibition.


EXHIBITION DETAILS

  • Artists must submit two framed paintings to The Hall (44 King Street), ready to hang, on Saturday June 22 by 3 pm.

  • Artists may submit one additional framed work (painted within the Festival dates, ineligible for judging or awards but available for sale) for exhibition at Art Lab (121 Main Street) by 5:30 pm, Saturday June 22.

  • Artists may also submit a smaller unframed work (maximum: 12" x 16") painted during the festival for exhibition and sale at the Parrsboro Creative office, 223 Main Street by 5 pm, Saturday June 22.

  • Artists must clearly indicate that HST is included in their stated price, if required to charge it.

  • Awards Night and Exhibition will be held Saturday June 22 at the The Hall located in Parrsboro from 7-10 pm

  • The Exhibition, which is open to the public, will continue Sunday June 23 at the The Hall, 44 King St. from 10 am to 5 pm.

  • Should a non-award work sell and be removed, it may be replaced by the artist with a work painted within the Festival dates. Pending space availability, an additional framed piece may be hung, available for sale, if an award work is sold. Should an award work be sold, it can be replaced but must remain on exhibit until the exhibition close; it may only be removed and replaced with the permission of the Event Director.

  • Ensure that pricing is consistent with the price of your work in other galleries.

  • No artist shall sell, purport to sell or carry on any form of commerce in the County of Cumberland as relates to their work, while participating in the event, unless such sale is pursuant to the terms of this agreement.

  • Breach of the terms shall constitute a violation of the agreement and exclusion of the Artist from the program at the discretion of Event Director.

  • Artists must leave their work for exhibition until 5 pm on Sunday June 23, 2024.

  • Following the final exhibition, all unsold works must be retrieved by the artist by Sunday between 5 and 6 pm, or arrangements must be made for shipping and insurance at the artist’s expense.

  • Parrsboro Creative will receive 40% of the proceeds of all sales at the event and the artist will receive 60%. Payments to the artists for sold work will be mailed within 30 days of the event.

  • Post-event sales are subject to the commission paid to Parrsboro Creative of 40% for the first 30 days and 30% for 30 days thereafter. We rely on the honour system.


PROMOTION

By submitting the application form, all juried participants give Parrsboro Creative their permission to use for promotional purposes only images of:

  1. work submitted for their application;

  2. work created during 2024 PIPAF;

  3. photos/videos of the artists participating at 2024 PIPAF.


AGREEMENT TO TERMS, CONDITIONS & EXHIBITION DETAILS

By submitting the online application form the artist agrees to all 2024 PIPAF Terms, Conditions & Exhibition Details stated above.

LIABILITY & PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT

I expressly understand and agree that neither Parrsboro Creative nor any of its agents, volunteers, assistants, or employees shall be held responsible or made subject of any claim seeking to assess damage or loss of any sort to myself, or another person on whose behalf this form is now signed, as a result of actual or proposed participation in the above-mentioned activity or program, and hereby agree to indemnify and hold Parrsboro Creative, its officers, agents, volunteers or employees harmless of any such claims.
